Montezuma getting there
Montezuma is located near the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, 41 km (25 mi) southwest of Paquera and 8 km (5 mi) south of the town of Cóbano. Most services are in Cóbano.
The drive from San José to Puntarenas takes about one hour along the new highway "Del Sol" or two hours on the original Pan-American road. Once in Puntarenas, go to the ferry terminal which is located at the very northwest end of the town. This is where the ferrys “ Naviera Tambor I & II” depart and arrive, going back and for between Puntarenas and Paquera. Once in Paquera, drive for one more hour, passing through Tambor beach and Cobano. The entire way to Cobano is paved; the road from Cobano to Montezuma is not.
The fastest way to get to Montezuma is to fly to Tambor airport; with Sansa (located beside the International Airport Juan Santa Maria) or Nature Air (located in Pavas, 20 minutes from the internationl airport). The flight takes about 25 minutes and costs about US$90. From Tambor, the drive to Montezuma takes about half hour.
The direct bus leaves twice a day (early morning and early afternoon) from the Coca Cola bus station in San José. It is called "Transportes Rodriguez" and also offers a messenger service. The bus goes directly onto the ferry in Puntarenas (so you don't have to move your luggage) and stops in Cobano, Montezuma, Mal Pais and Santa Teresa. From Montezuma leaves at 6.30am and 2.30pm. From San José at 6am and 2pm.
Another way to get to Montezuma is to go by bus to Jacó (one hour). From there, enjoy a one hour boat ride straight to Montezuma beach.
It is possible to hire private transportation by taxi to the ferry dock in Puntarenas for about US$80. Then catch another taxi in Paquera to Montezuma (US$40). Another option is to travel with Montezuma Expeditions. They offer a private, door to door, shuttle service at great prices. Check out www.montezumaexpeditions.com
